Peter Kiewit and David McCourt founded RCN in 1993. Kiewit was also the owner of a competitive-access service called MFS. Eventually, RCN took on MFS’s residential phone operations, and following the enactment of the 1996 Telecom Act, it started operating as a competitive local exchange carrier.
From thereon, RCN started growing in the cable TV industry. In particular, the company began to develop cable systems in places that already possessed cable TV services. A large part of its systems consisted of partnerships with power enterprises that guaranteed rights-of-way on poles. This is when RCN launched its triple-play features, offering internet, television, and telephone services, even though it resold some of its voice operations through incumbent phone company lines.
Over time, RCN greatly expanded its market presence. On the East Coast, RCN bought Interport, UltraNet Communications, JavaNet, and ISPs Erol’s Internet. Brainstorm and DNAI were its West Coast acquisitions. In the capital, the company entered into a joint venture called StarPower Communications with a local enterprise named Pepco, purchased its stake in 2004, and renamed itself to RCN.
RCN became an all-digital network in February of 2009. As a result, it was now allowed to use its entire spectrum to provide high-definition and digital TV broadcasts. This made compressing signals not as necessary as earlier.
In August of 2016, TPG purchased RCN, which had grown into one of the largest cable TV providers in Chicago. In addition, TPG bought Grande Communications Network, combined the two companies, thus becoming the owner of a considerable broadband network.
In February of 2020, RCN announced that it’s going to merge with EnTouch Systems, a company that offers home security, voice, and internet services in Houston. The merger should be completed by the end of this year. Once the companies finalize the deal, RCN will add about 22,000 Texas customers.
