Best Internet Plans in the U.S.

internet monitors

To determine which internet providers scored the highest, we looked at over 30 companies and analyzed their prices, speeds, plan varieties, customer and professional reviews, and data from the FCC. The top three service providers of 2020 in the US are Verizon Fios, AT&T Internet, and RCN. Xfinity and CenturyLink came in fourth and fifth, but we’ll focus on the top three choices.

Best Internet Service Providers of 2020

Verizon Fios

Verizon Fios is ranked first in our list of 2020 internet providers due to their performance and reliability; they simply excel beyond all others on both fronts. Since both factors are the main crucial elements of customer satisfaction, not many users have any complaints about Verizon internet. Plus, the speeds available in Verizon plans range from 100Mbps to 940Mbps, so even if you need a lower budget plan, you’re still getting great speeds. Every single plan by Verizon comes with unlimited data caps, so you can game, upload, download, surf, and stream 24/7 without worrying about overage fees. The only downside is that Verizon Fios is limited to select Northeast areas, which is definitely a downer for everyone else.

AT&T Internet

Our second-best choice, AT&T Internet, is a very close second. They offer both DSL and Fiber Optic plans and cater to 21 states – a significantly better national coverage than many others. There are 8 options for DSL internet plans, 3 of which can be considered broadband with their high speeds – another rare occurrence. AT&T fiber optic plans are threefold, the fastest of which comes in at 940Mbps and is one of the fastest internet plans available nationwide in 2020. AT&T caters to rural communities and urban centers equally through their variable plan speeds and prices, and is a great provider to choose no matter where you live if you need high-speed internet of either type.

RCN

RCN ranks third overall for the best internet providers of 2020, mainly due to their affordability. Their plans start as low as $19.99, which is the most affordable internet plan nationwide. However, they are only available to residents in a handful of city centers including Boston, Chicago, New York City, and Philadelphia.

The Cheapest 2020 Internet Plans

If your current priority is cost over speed, the best internet providers for you are RCN, Frontier, and Cox. Suddenlink and Xfinity are relatively affordable as well, and all of these providers offer very affordable plans that can handle only a couple devices at once but are reliable.

RCN

RCN ranks first on our lift of the most affordable internet plans of 2020 for their incredibly cheap unlimited plans. Their cheapest plan is only $19.99 per month for 10Mbps download speeds and unlimited data. This plan is pay-per-month rather than a long-term contract. The provider is only available in select metro areas including New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, and Washington, D.C.

Frontier

Frontier is another very affordable provider that ranks second on our list of the cheapest internet plans and providers of 2020. Their cheapest plan is the Simply Broadband Core plan for $20 per month, though typically only on a contract. What makes this price even more amazing is that it is a fiber internet connection rather than DSL, and has download and upload speeds of 6Mbps. Frontier is available in 29 states and offers fairly full coverage in each one.

Cox

Cox comes in third for the cheapest internet plans in 2020. The Cox Internet Starter plan has download speeds of 10Mbps and upload speeds of 1Mbps and costs $30 per month. Users coast to coast can access Cox in 19 states across the nation.

The Fastest Internet Plans in 2020

When looking for the fastest internet plans with any provider, your focus should reside with the fiber optic plans. Every plan that ranks highest for speed on our list is a fiber internet connection with speeds close to 1 Gigabit or a staggering 2 Gb per second. Unfortunately, fiber plans are not as widely available as we’d like yet with only 40% availability in the US, though nearly every state has at least one choice in select areas. The fastest internet plans of 2020 are offered by Xfinity, Cox, AT&T, Frontier, and Verizon Fios.

The Best 2002 Internet Providers for Gamers

Every serious gamer knows that any latency with your internet connection is relatable to kryptonite. It might seem like 1,000 milliseconds are nothing, a blink of an eye, less than the span of a single breath, but in the gaming world? That’s enough of a blip to ruin your game and send you spiralling into despair when you were this close to beating your high score.

The best internet providers for gamers are the ones with the absolute lowest lag times 24/7, so you should only very rarely experience a lag, if any at all. The top internet providers for gamers in 2020 for low latency and high speeds are AT&T, Spectrum Internet, Viasat Internet, Xfinity, CenturyLink, Frontier, Verizon Fios, and Cox.

Evaluating Internet Service Providers

Analyzing internet providers to determine which one(s) can provide the service you’re looking for is twofold:

  1. Public Data and Advertised Products. Great internet providers stand out when looking at the volume of company searches on search engines and consumer research. We look at connection type, latency times, price, speeds, reliability, fees, and data caps. It’s important to look at all factors as well as overall customer satisfaction trends when determining which provider offers what you need. This should be the first step so you can narrow down which internet service providers offer the right speeds for an affordable price with desired reliability and data allowances.
  2. Third-Party Reviews. One of the best ways to gauge a good internet provider is to look at both objective professional reviews by independent sources as well as consumer reviews and ratings on a number of factors and ISP characteristics. It’s important to use both and ensure total objectivity to make sure the reviews are trustworthy and that opinions are independent and accurate assessments. This should be your second step to ensure that the companies that offer the right products and prices can also satisfy your other expectations that are not so easily quantified and analyzed, such as ease of setup, tech support, or customer service since these elements can make or break your experience with a provider as well.

Final Thoughts

Choosing an internet provider is a complicated process that does require some independent research and objective analysis. The best way to choose an internet provider and appropriate plan for your household is to rank each factor in order of importance and score each provider and plan for yourself. This way, you’ll discover which provider offers the most of what is more important to you. We hope our analysis and recommendations will help you along with the process!
