About Total Wireless
Total Wireless is TracFone Wireless’ subsidiary and performs services on behalf of its parent company. It’s one of several Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNO) that carry out this task.
David Topp and F.J. Pollak founded the company in 1996 as a prepaid cell phone enterprise. They named the company Topp Telecom Inc. Three years later, Topp received a large influx of capital from TelMex, the largest telephone company in Mexico. In particular, they paid $57.5 million to control 55% of the company.
The following year, TelMex introduced their mobile unit, creating América Móvil. They made Topp their subsidiary, and later that year, Topp Telecom Inc. took on the name of TracFone Wireless Inc.
Initially, you couldn’t access TracFone’s service via anything other than TracFone’s branded devices. TracFone locked these devices with their internal SIM cards, and not even GSM phones that another carrier had unlocked could accept TracFone’s SIM card.
But TracFone eventually altered this practice. In 2013, they presented the Bring Your Own Phone initiative, and started selling SIM cards you could add to eligible non-TracFone devices (e.g., Verizon’s CDMA devices). Two years later, TracFone expanded this strategy to include compatible unlocked GSM devices.
In September of 2020, Verizon Wireless stated their aim to purchase TracFone in a cash-and-stock agreement. The companies are expected to finalize this deal by the end of next year.
Total Wireless Provides Totally Fine Options
Even though Total Wireless wasn’t too imaginative in terms of their plans, you should still be able to find one that suits you. Additionally, if you’re looking to connect all your family members under the same network, Total Wireless may be a sound, affordable choice.
