About Cricket
Leap Wireless International launched Cricket Wireless in March of 1990. The company’s earliest sales strategy focused on the market in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Accordingly, the company achieved a large part of its initial success by relying on small, rural markets.
In September of 2008, the company reached a 10-year agreement with MetroPCS, which included both current and future markets of the companies. To further expand their markets, the two enterprises founded “Premium Extended Coverage.” In turn, they included 14 wireless enterprises into their new roaming partnership.
To gain access to a faster network, Cricked entered into a five-year agreement with Sprint in August of 2010. This enabled Cricket to employ Sprint’s national 3G EVDO network.
Three years later, AT&T purchased Leap Wireless International, Cricket Wireless’ parent company. The sale was confirmed in 2014. Since then, Cricket’s been able to utilize AT&T’s network, thus ensuring the identical coverage that customers of higher-priced carriers receive. As of today, about 70% of the US uses AT&T’s 4G coverage.
The only downside to sharing AT&T’s network is that internet data speed can be lowered in favor of AT&T’s customers in busy areas.
At the end of 2016, both AT&T and Cricket Wireless disabled their 2G network. This made customers move on to upgraded cell phones to access newer networks. Luckily, Cricket’s been able to keep up with the most recent trades, having launched its 5G network countrywide in August of 2020. As a result, Cricket Wireless has maintained a high number of active subscribers, which currently stands at around 10 million.
